20 Smart Questions to Ask at the End of a Job Interview

By Zyctra Team · · 5 min read

At the end of almost every interview you'll hear: "Do you have any questions for us?" Saying "No, I think you've covered everything" is a missed opportunity. Thoughtful questions show you are serious about the role — and the answers help you decide whether you actually want it.

Questions about the role

  1. What does a typical day or week look like in this role?
  2. What would you expect me to achieve in the first 90 days?
  3. What are the biggest challenges someone in this position will face?
  4. How will my performance be measured?
  5. Is this a new position, or is someone moving on from it?

Questions about the team

  1. Who would I be working with most closely?
  2. How would you describe the team's working style?
  3. How does the team handle disagreements or tight deadlines?
  4. What do people on the team enjoy most about working here?

Questions about growth

  1. What training or development opportunities are available?
  2. Where have people in this role progressed to in the past?
  3. Does the company support professional certifications or courses?

Questions about the company

  1. What are the company's main priorities for the next year?
  2. How has the company changed over the last few years?
  3. What makes people stay here long-term?
  4. How would you describe the company culture in three words?

Questions to close strongly

  1. Is there anything about my background that makes you hesitant? I'd be happy to clarify.
  2. What are the next steps in the process, and when can I expect to hear back?
  3. What do you personally enjoy most about working here?
  4. Is there anything else I can provide to help your decision?

Questions to avoid in a first interview

  • Anything you could easily find on the company's website.
  • Leading with salary, holidays or time off before an offer (unless they raise it).
  • "How quickly can I get promoted?"
  • Yes/no questions that don't start a conversation.

How many to ask

Prepare five or six and ask two or three, since some will be answered during the interview. Write them down — it's perfectly fine to glance at your notes.
