How to Answer "Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?"
By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read
"Where do you see yourself in five years?" can feel like a trap. Say "in your job" and you sound like a threat; say "running my own business" and you sound like you are leaving. The good news: there is a calm, honest middle path.
What the interviewer really wants to know
- Have you thought about your career at all?
- Does this role fit your plans, or is it a stopgap?
- Will you grow here, and stay long enough to be worth training?
A three-part answer
- The skills you want to master — tied to the job in front of you.
- The responsibility you hope to grow into — leading a project, mentoring others, specialising.
- Why this organisation is the right place for that — show you have read about them.
Example: early career
"In five years I'd like to be someone the team relies on for complex accounts. In the first two years I want to master the reporting and client side of this role, and then take on responsibility for a small portfolio. Your graduate programme and the way you rotate people across teams is exactly the kind of foundation I'm looking for."
Example: experienced professional
"I see myself leading clinical quality improvement. I've already led two audits on my ward, and this role would let me do that across the whole department. In five years I'd like to be mentoring newer nurses through the same process."
What to avoid
- Naming a different career or a plan to leave the country soon.
- "I don't know" — even an uncertain plan shows you think ahead.
- Joking about taking the interviewer's job.
- Talking only about titles and money instead of skills and impact.
