How to Find and Land a Remote Job

By Zyctra Team · · 7 min read

Remote work gives you access to employers far beyond your city — but remote roles also attract applicants from everywhere, so you need to stand out.

Understand the types of remote work

  • Fully remote, anywhere: the most competitive; the company hires globally.
  • Remote within a region or time zone: e.g. "Remote — Europe" or "Remote — UK only", often for tax, legal or collaboration reasons.
  • Hybrid: some days in the office.
  • Contract and freelance: often the easiest way in, especially for international candidates.

Read the location requirements carefully before applying.

Where to look

  • Remote-focused job boards and the remote filters on major job sites
  • Careers pages of companies that are known to be remote-first
  • LinkedIn, with the "Remote" filter and your target locations
  • Freelance platforms, to build experience and reviews
  • Professional communities in your field

Show you can work remotely

Employers worry about communication, reliability and self-management. Prove these on your CV and in interviews:

  • Mention previous remote or distributed work, including freelancing and projects with people in other locations.
  • Name the tools you use: Slack, Teams, Notion, Jira, Trello, Google Workspace, Zoom.
  • Give examples of written communication: documentation, reports, async updates.
  • Show results you achieved independently.

Practical setup

Have reliable internet with a backup (mobile data or a second provider), a power backup where electricity is unstable, a quiet space and a good headset. Some employers ask about this.

Avoid remote-job scams

  • Never pay to apply, for "training" or for equipment.
  • Be cautious of interviews held only by text chat.
  • Be wary of offers without an interview or with unusually high pay for little work.
  • Check that the recruiter's email matches the company's real domain.
  • Never share bank or ID details before a verified written offer.

Prepare for remote interviews

Expect questions like "How do you stay productive without supervision?" and "How do you handle time-zone differences?". Practise them — Zyctra's interview practice can run a remote-job interview for your profession and give feedback on your answers.
