How to Get Your First Tech Job in Nigeria
By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read
Nigeria's tech scene keeps growing — fintech, e-commerce, health tech, logistics and remote work for companies abroad. Breaking in is competitive, but the route is clearer than it looks.
Pick an entry point
- Frontend or full-stack development — the most openings, the most competition.
- Data analysis — Excel, SQL and Power BI open doors in banks, telcos and FMCG.
- Product design (UI/UX) — a strong portfolio matters more than a degree.
- QA testing, technical support, IT support — often the fastest first job.
- Product management and operations — good for people with business experience.
Build proof, not just certificates
Employers hire what they can see. Build two or three projects that solve real problems — a booking app for a local business, a dashboard of public data, a redesign of a real app — and put them online with a short write-up of what you did.
Where the jobs are
- LinkedIn (set "open to work" and post about your projects)
- Company career pages of fintechs and startups
- Tech communities, Twitter/X and WhatsApp groups — many roles are shared there first
- Internship and graduate programmes
- Remote job boards for international roles
Stand out in applications
- Tailor your CV to each role and lead with projects.
- Keep your GitHub or portfolio link at the top.
- Write a short, specific message to the hiring manager.
Prepare for the interview
Expect a take-home task or live coding, plus questions about your projects. Practise explaining your decisions clearly — try a Technical interview for "Software Engineer" in Zyctra Interview Practice.
