How to Prepare for the NCLEX as an Internationally Educated Nurse

By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read

For internationally educated nurses, the NCLEX-RN is the gateway to practising in the United States, and it is also used in Canada. It is challenging, but thousands of nurses from Nigeria, India, the Philippines, Kenya and beyond pass every year.

Before you can sit the exam

  • Choose the state (or province) you want to be licensed in — requirements differ.
  • Have your education and licence evaluated by the credentialing body your board requires.
  • Apply to the board of nursing, then register with Pearson VUE.
  • Prepare for an English test if your board asks for one.

How the exam works

The NCLEX is computer adaptive: questions get harder or easier based on your answers. The Next Generation NCLEX focuses on clinical judgement — case studies where you recognise cues, analyse them, prioritise and act.

How to study

  • Practise questions daily and read every rationale, right or wrong.
  • Master prioritisation: airway–breathing–circulation, Maslow, safety first.
  • Know delegation — what an RN, LPN and nursing assistant can do in the US.
  • Review pharmacology by drug class, not single drugs.
  • Take full-length practice tests to build stamina.

A 10-week plan

  1. Weeks 1–3: content review by system, 50 questions a day.
  2. Weeks 4–7: mixed questions and case studies, 75–100 a day.
  3. Weeks 8–9: full-length tests, review weak areas.
  4. Week 10: light review, rest, logistics.
