How to Write a CV With No Work Experience
By Zyctra Team · · 6 min read
Everyone starts with no work experience. Employers hiring for entry-level roles know that — they are looking for potential, reliability and evidence that you can learn. Your CV's job is to show those things using everything you have done so far.
Recommended structure
- Contact details
- Personal profile (3–4 lines)
- Education
- Projects
- Volunteering, internships, part-time or informal work
- Skills
- Achievements, certifications and activities
Write a focused personal profile
Say what you are studying or have just finished, two or three strengths, and the kind of role you want.
"Recent accounting graduate (Second Class Upper) with strong Excel skills and hands-on experience managing a student society's budget of over ₦2 million. Detail-oriented and comfortable with deadlines. Seeking a graduate trainee role in audit or financial reporting."
Make education work harder
Include your degree, grade or expected grade, and relevant modules, dissertation or final-year project. Mention awards, scholarships and high marks.
Projects count as experience
A project shows initiative and real skills. For each one, write what you built or did, the tools you used, and the result.
- "Built a budgeting app in React used by 40 classmates to track spending."
- "Designed a survey of 200 students and analysed results in Excel for my marketing dissertation."
Everything else you have done
Volunteering, church or mosque roles, helping in a family business, tutoring, freelance design, organising events, sports captaincy — all of these show responsibility, teamwork and communication. Describe them like jobs, with action verbs and results.
Skills: be specific
Instead of "computer literate", write "Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP), Canva, Google Workspace, basic SQL". Add languages with your level.
Common mistakes
- Spreading one page of content across three pages. One tidy page is fine.
- Listing school subjects from years ago instead of recent achievements.
- Using an unprofessional email address.
- Sending the same CV for every job — tweak the profile and skills each time.
