Remote Job Scams: How to Spot a Fake Job Offer
By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read
Remote work has opened global opportunities — and given scammers a new way to reach job seekers. Knowing the warning signs protects your money and your identity.
Red flags
- You are asked to pay — for training, a work permit, "equipment" or an application fee. Real employers do not charge you to work.
- An offer without an interview, or an "interview" only by text chat.
- A salary far above the market for very little work.
- Personal email addresses (gmail, outlook) for a large company.
- Pressure to act today.
- A cheque to deposit and money to send on — a classic fraud.
- Requests for bank details, passwords or ID before any contract.
How to check an employer
- Find the company's official website and check the job is listed there.
- Check that the recruiter's email domain matches the company's website.
- Look the recruiter up on LinkedIn — a real profile has history and connections.
- Search the company name with "scam" or "reviews".
- Call the company's published phone number to confirm.
If you think you've been targeted
- Stop responding and do not send money or documents.
- If you shared bank details, call your bank immediately.
- Report the listing to the job board and to your country's fraud authority.
