How to Become a Software Developer Without a Degree

By Zyctra Team · · 8 min read

A computer science degree helps, but it isn't the only way into software development. Plenty of working developers learned through online courses, bootcamps and self-study. What employers need to see is that you can build working software and learn quickly.

1. Pick a direction

  • Front-end web: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, then a framework such as React.
  • Back-end: a language like JavaScript (Node.js), Python, Java or C#, plus databases and APIs.
  • Full-stack: both of the above.
  • Mobile: Kotlin (Android), Swift (iOS) or cross-platform tools like React Native or Flutter.

Choose one and stick with it for several months. Switching languages every few weeks is the most common reason people stall.

2. Learn the core skills

  • Programming fundamentals: variables, loops, functions, data structures
  • Git and GitHub
  • How the web works: HTTP, APIs, JSON
  • A database (SQL is the safest first choice)
  • Debugging and reading documentation
  • Basic testing

3. Build real projects

Tutorial projects look the same on every portfolio. Build two or three things that solve a real problem for real people:

  • A booking system for a local business
  • A tool that automates something tedious at your current job
  • An app for a community group, church, mosque or school

Deploy them so they can be used, write clear README files, and be ready to explain your decisions.

4. Show your work

  • A clean GitHub profile with pinned projects
  • A simple portfolio website
  • A CV that lists projects with the technologies and results, like job experience
  • Posts about what you learned — they show communication skills

5. Get your first opportunity

  • Apply for junior, graduate and apprenticeship roles.
  • Freelance small projects for local businesses.
  • Contribute to open source.
  • Look for internal moves if your current company has a tech team.
  • Network in local tech communities and online groups.

6. Prepare for interviews

Practise data structures and algorithm problems, explain your projects clearly, and prepare behavioural answers with the STAR method.
