How to Negotiate a Job Offer Beyond Salary

By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read

An offer is the start of a conversation, not the end of one. Even when the salary band is fixed, many other parts of the package are flexible — and they can be worth as much as a raise.

Things you can negotiate

  • Start date — time to finish a course, relocate or rest.
  • Remote or hybrid days — saves transport time and money.
  • Training budget — certifications, conferences, exam fees.
  • An early salary review — "a review at six months instead of twelve".
  • Job title — matters for your next move.
  • Annual leave — a few extra days.
  • Signing bonus or relocation support.
  • Equipment — laptop, phone, internet allowance.

How to ask

  1. Say thank you and show enthusiasm first.
  2. Ask for time — 24 to 48 hours is normal.
  3. Bundle your requests into one conversation instead of asking for things one by one.
  4. Give a reason that helps them too.

A script you can adapt

"Thank you — I'm excited about this role and I'd like to accept. I understand the salary is set within a band. Would there be flexibility on two things: two remote days a week, and a salary review at six months based on my results? That would make this an easy yes for me."

Keep it professional

  • Get the final terms in writing.
  • Don't invent competing offers.
  • Once you have agreed, stop negotiating.
