How to Pass a Panel Interview
By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read
Panel interviews are common in government, healthcare, education, banking and NGOs. They feel intense because several people watch you at once — but they are also fairer, because no single person decides.
How a panel usually works
- A chair introduces everyone and keeps time.
- Each member asks questions about their own area: technical, HR, the team you would join.
- Everyone scores you separately against the same criteria, then they compare.
Before the day
- Ask for the panel members' names and roles, then look them up.
- Read the job description line by line — panels often score against it directly.
- Prepare one strong example for each requirement.
During the interview
- Start your answer with the person who asked, then include the others with your eyes as you speak.
- Write down names on your notepad in seating order.
- Structure every answer (STAR works well) so each scorer can find the points they need.
- Stay steady with a cold panel member. Some are told to be neutral; it is not about you.
- Answer the question asked, even if the previous one went badly.
Your questions at the end
Ask one question that several panel members can answer, such as: "What would success look like in the first six months, from each of your perspectives?"
