How to Ask for a Promotion (and Get a Clear Answer)

By Zyctra Team · · 3 min read

Waiting to be noticed is the slowest way to get promoted. Managers are busy; a clear, evidence-based conversation makes the decision easier for them.

Step 1: know what the next level looks like

Find the job description or framework for the role above yours, or ask your manager: "What does someone at the next level do differently?"

Step 2: build your evidence

  • Results with numbers: revenue, time saved, patients, students, projects delivered.
  • Work you already do at the next level.
  • Feedback from colleagues, clients or customers.

Step 3: choose the moment

Book a dedicated meeting — not a corridor chat. The best times are after a success, during review season, or when budgets are being planned.

Step 4: make the case

"I'd like to talk about moving into the senior role. Over the past year I've led the onboarding of three new clients, trained two new hires, and reduced complaints by 30%. Those are the responsibilities of the senior role, and I'd like to be recognised for them. What would you need to see to support my promotion?"

Step 5: turn "not yet" into a plan

  • Ask for the specific gaps.
  • Agree on what success looks like.
  • Set a date to review — "Can we revisit this in three months?"
  • Confirm it in a short email afterwards.

Rehearse the conversation with Zyctra — ask it to play your manager and push back.
